MACHEIA alude a uma medida de quantidade análoga ao tamanho da própria mão. O estúdio foi criado em 2020 pela designer de produto italo-alemã Lucrezia Papillo e arquitecta luso-moçambicana Iany Gayo. Com um foco intencional em fibras naturais, técnicas ancestrais – e na sua continuidade -, o trabalho desenvolvido pela MACHEIA vai desde objectos-história, a instalações colaborativas e comissões privadas. Em 2023, a coleção Bulrush participou de eventos internacionais como a Paris Design Week e a Vienna Design Week. No último ano o estúdio de design tem vindo a pesquisar materiais como a pele, biomateriais à base de algas e fibras naturais.
MACHEIA refers to a unit of measurement analogous to the size of one’s own hand. The studio was founded in 2020 by Italian-German product designer Lucrezia Papillo and Portuguese-Mozambican architect Iany Gayo. With an intentional focus on natural fibers and ancestral techniques—and their continuity—the work developed by MACHEIA ranges from historical objects to collaborative installations and private commissions. In 2023, the Bulrush collection participated in international events such as Paris Design Week and Vienna Design Week. Over the past year, the design studio has been researching materials such as leather, algae-based biomaterials, and natural fibers.

Cadeira: O conceito da cadeira surge da ideia de que todas as espirais em bunho começam ao redor de uma mão. O buraco representa o negativo da mão do criador, realçado pelo encosto metálico de forma orgânica, que marca o ponto de partida da cadeira. O bunho solto confere uma nova interpretação a esta técnica, crua e exposta, aproximando-a da sua identidade natural enquanto planta.
Assento: Inspirado no Tanho, a peça mais icónica da técnica do bunho, o Assento é um híbrido entre banco e mesa de apoio. Ao longo da peça, a espiral em bunho transforma-se num arco metálico que, de forma orgânica, se liberta do movimento em espiral.

Chair: The chair concept arises from the idea that all bunho spirals begin around a hand. The hole represents the negative space of the creator’s hand, here accentuated by the organically shaped metal backrest, marking the chair’s point of origin. The loose bunho offers a fresh interpretation of this technique, raw and exposed, bringing it closer to its identity as a plant.
Seat: Inspired by the Tanho, the most iconic piece in the Bunho weaving technique, the Seat is a hybrid between a stool and a side table. Along the piece, the bunho spiral transitions into a metal arc that, in an organic form, breaks free from the spiral movement.
