Susana Cereja (Mafra, 1992) iniciou a sua carreira em arquitetura. Durante os estudos de Arquitetura em Lisboa e uma breve estadia na Alemanha entre 2011 e 2016, Susana mergulhou em técnicas ancestrais de produção artística, descobrindo a sua vocação na tapeçaria de Arraiolos e explorando Ilustração, Desenho e Gravura na Faculdade de Belas Artes e no Ar.Co. Enquanto estudava, começou a carreira profissional no atelier de Joana Vasconcelos, onde trabalhou como arquiteta por cinco anos. Sua paixão pela expressão artística, porém, nunca diminuiu, consolidando-se com exposições em Lisboa, Algarve, Águeda, Cáceres, Badajoz, Londres, Tallinn, Kranj, entre outras. O trabalho de Susana, marcado pela feminilidade e pela busca da liberdade, mistura técnicas como gravura e tapeçaria de Arraiolos. Em 2022, fez uma residência artística em Tallinn, e em 2023 destacou-se como artista convidada na Bienal Internacional de Arte Têxtil BIEN, na Eslovénia. Susana também se dedica a projetos artísticos comunitários, deixando um impacto significativo a nível local.
Susana Cereja (Mafra, 1992) began her career in architecture. While studying in Lisbon and during a brief stay in Germany from 2011 to 2016, she immersed herself in ancestral artistic production techniques, discovering her calling in Arraiolos tapestry and exploring illustration, drawing, and printmaking at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Ar.Co. While studying, she started her professional career at Joana Vasconcelos’ studio, where she worked as an architect for five years. However, her passion for artistic expression never waned, leading to exhibitions in Lisbon, the Algarve, Águeda, Cáceres, Badajoz, London, Tallinn, Kranj, and beyond. Susana’s work, characterized by femininity and the pursuit of freedom, blends techniques like printmaking and Arraiolos tapestry. In 2022, she participated in an artistic residency in Tallinn and, in 2023, she was a featured artist at the BIEN International Textile Art Biennial in Slovenia. Susana also engages in community art projects, making a significant local impact.

Descrição: As peças de Susana Cereja redefinem a utilização do ponto de Arraiolos, uma técnica portuguesa do século XVI, onde a artista não só questiona a utilização do ponto, como introduz elementos inesperados como a resina epoxy, espelho, luz ou pintura, criando um diálogo entre tradição e inovação. Susana Cereja também reutilizou e reinventou um ponto que deixara muito cedo de ser utilizado, pela sua dificuldade e tempo de produção para a indústria. “Aegis” significa escudo, e tem inscrito “Mais Amor”. Inspirada nos pratos Portugueses tradicionais, esta obra renova a técnica de tapeçaria com uma estrutura metálica. O Amor é o nosso escudo e esta peça simboliza a proteção e a força que o Amor nos dá.

Description: Susana Cereja’s pieces redefine the use of the Arraiolos stitch, a 16th-century Portuguese technique, where the artist not only questions its traditional application but also introduces unexpected elements like epoxy resin, mirrors, light, and paint, creating a dialogue between tradition and innovation. Susana also revives and reinvents a stitch that fell out of use early on due to its complexity and time-intensive production unsuitable for industry. Aegis—meaning “shield”—is inscribed with “More Love.” Inspired by traditional Portuguese plates, this work renews tapestry techniques with a metal structure. Love is our shield, and this piece symbolizes the protection and strength that love provides.
